The Greenhouse Effect
The staff at the Greenhouse Effect does a little bit of everything, from running the popular bar downstairs to painting some of the stunningly good murals on the guestrooms' themed walls.
The two-star hotel won us over with equal dollops of personality, style, and comfort. Fifteen rooms and five apartments are spotlessly clean, sporting mini-fridges, safes, and stylish plush chairs. Checker-floored bathrooms are either en-suite or shared. All rooms come with themes. We liked the Mary Jane, painted a smart light green and offering a fantastic view of the action on the street below.
The Greenhouse is located near the center of the always-bustling Red Light district. Be sure to check out the bar that doubles as the reception, a chill area to have a hemp beer and take in the Warmoesstraat atmosphere.

About the The Greenhouse Effect neighborhood
Amsterdam's (in)famous Red Light District is a short walk from Centraal Station and lies within the "Old Center," the oldest part of town. True, the area is home to hundreds of red windows for "women of the night", live sex shows and marijuana peddling coffee shops. But it's hardly a dangerous free-for all. There is a heavy police presence throughout the neighborhood and cameras on many corners.
As night falls, the narrow streets become increasingly crowded (and increasingly noisy) with happy-go-lucky tourists out for a fun night. Perhaps ironically, the Red Light District also boast some traditional attractions, such as the Oude Kerk (The Old Church), cool shops, and many affordable hotels.
